How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Q-Switched lasers deliver a specific wavelength of light energy in a pulse that produces a shockwave causing a photo-acoustic effect that fragments the ink pigments into particles small enough for the body’s lymphatic system to sweep away.

These particles are then small enough for the body’s immune system to dissolve and the lymphatic system to sweep away.  Your immune and lymphatic health is critical to the speed and success of this clearance.

6-8 weeks is recommended between treatments to allow for this natural process.

The ink particles closest to the surface absorb the light first, then as these are removed, deeper ink particles are exposed to the laser. Tattoo removal requires multiple treatments as the laser targets deeper and deeper layers of ink. Professional tattoos require more treatments than amateur tattoos because the ink has been pushed deeper into the skin.

Different coloured inks require different wavelengths to fragment the pigment

For example:

In our Qanta laser, these wavelengths are native to the laser. They have full power and full penetration. Other lasers typically have one native wavelength which is then filtered with an attachment to achieve the other wavelengths. These lasers have less power and less penetration. Full control over power and penetration means we can affectively target the ink particles while limiting damage to your skin.

Less pain, less risk and faster healing

The Quanta laser uses a superior Optibeam II® handpiece that generates a flat-top beam profile, distributing the power of the laser evenly across a square spot which covers large areas evenly and quickly with no overlap.

The Quanta is the only laser with a square spot handpiece
If the laser beam is not homogeneous (flat top), longer healing time and side effects can occur.
The square spot provides more precise overlap of pulses and a 20% reduced treatment down time in tattoo removal compared with traditional spot shapes.

The Frac-Tatt Method Reduces Pain and Increases Ink Clearance

The Frac-Tatt method is an innovative tattoo removal technique that uses fractionated laser to prepare the skin ahead of treatment with Q-switched laser.

This allows the laser energy to penetrate more effectively, breaking down ink particles more efficiently to promote faster clearance from the body.

Frac-Tatt is particularly effective for stubborn colors and offers improved comfort and reduced downtime compared to traditional methods.

After we target the ink in your tattoo, we do a second treatment with our unique fractionated laser to rejuvenate your skin, stimulate collagen and fast track healing

This drives microscopic columns of light deep into the skin, stimulating the body to create new skin cells and stimulate collagen to heal the light affected areas.

This greatly minimises any risk of scarring or pigmentation changes.

This technology is unique to MorphIUs

Laser is a tool for transformation

The Quanta Q-Plus C MC Evo is a next generation laser with mixed use technology, capable of treating multiple colours at once.

This is a more advanced approach to tattoo removal than targeting a single colour.

It requires an advanced understanding of laser technology and the application of different wavelengths for all skin types and ink pigments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your initial consult is designed to meet the license requirements of the radiological council.  We like to meet you, assess your ink and understand your unique circumstances.

We ask you to complete a pre-consult questionnaire before you attend the studio for this appointment.  This provides critical information so we can customise your treatment plan.

We will educate you on the removal process so you know what to expect, answer all your questions, estimate the number of treatments and quote the cost of each treatment.

If you are happy to proceed we do a test spot with the laser to make sure you don’t have an adverse reaction before we begin your treatment cycle.

Should you choose to proceed, we schedule your first metamorphosis treatment booking.

Each treatment is an independent session, you are not locked into a set period or number of sessions.  You can begin and cease treatment as you choose.

The cost of treatment is calculated based on the size of your tattoo.  The minimum treatment cost is $165 for small tattoos and increases from there.  We custom quote huge tattoos and multiple treatment sites.  Discounts may be negotiated for extensive treatment requirements.  Afterpay is available.

Regardless of the size of your tattoo, we allocate a minimum half hour appointment window.  This provides time for you to settle in, to review your progress, answer questions, provide your treatment, apply cold air, receive red light therapy and after-care, to settle your account and make your next appointment.  We don’t want you to be rushed, this can be a sensitive process, we want you to feel calm, comfortable and cared for at all times.

The FracTatt technique uses fractionated laser to create micro-channels in the skin to ventilate heat and gas before targeting the ink with full beam laser.

This first pass with Q-Switch laser does impact the ink, but the biggest benefit is in preparing and protecting the skin.  It greatly minimises the risk of blistering, scarring and pigmentation changes.

The fractionated laser also treats existing scar tissue caused by prior treatment or the tattooing itself.

MorphIUs is the only laser tattoo removal studio in Perth with fractionated capability.

For more information on the FracTatt Method, read our article here: The FracTatt Advantage

MorphIUs uses the Kirby Desai scale to estimate the number of treatments.  The criteria required to assess your score is partially collected in the pre-consult questionnaire.  It takes into account your skin type and colour, the location of the tattoo on your body, how much ink has been used, the colour of the ink, and any scarring.

Your answers contribute to an estimate of the number of treatments required.  For example, an amateur tattoo in black ink on your upper body will be easier to remove than a multi-colour cover-up on your lower leg.  The scale is considered a conservative indicator for the number of sessions and does not take into account advances in laser technology and treatment technique.  Treatment effectiveness is impacted by your overall health, fitness and mobility.

As a guide, you should plan for approximately 6-8 treatments 8 weeks apart. You are not locked into a fixed number of treatments and can attend, delay or cease treatment as you choose.

Yes.  More painful than getting the tattoo.  But treatment is usually very quick.  A small tattoo may only take 10 seconds to treat.  Larger treatment sites and multi-colour tattoos take longer.  As the treatment progresses, coloured ink at deeper layers requires a slower pulse.  Some parts of the body can be more painful than others and different people have different pain thresholds.  Pain can also be elevated at the beginning of a woman’s menstrual cycle or if you consumed a significant amount of alcohol the day before treatment.

We use a Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling unit to apply cold air during and after treatment to numb the skin and cool the inflammatory response.

We also recommend a topical anaesthetic be applied to numb the skin in advance of treatment.  This doesn’t take the pain away completely but can make it more bearable.  We offer this for sale at your initial consult.

Yes, with the exception of white ink and some yellow inks.  The Quanta Q Plus C Evo MT laser has 2 discrete laser sources generating 3 different wavelengths.  1064nm targets black ink, 532nm targets red ink, 694nm targets blue and green ink.  Two of these sources can be combined in a single treatment to target mixed colours.  This is the only laser in Perth with this capability.

Other lasers have one laser source and then use a filter to channel the wavelength into different parameters to treat coloured ink.  This is not as powerful or effective as using a native laser source optimally designed for coloured ink.  Filtered lasers also lack penetration, so while the first few treatments can be effective, the laser is not capable of reaching ink in deeper levels of the dermis and as the tattoo fades, subsequent treatments remove less and less ink.  We often have clients who had a coloured tattoo partially removed elsewhere and when that laser stopped delivering results, they come to us.  The disadvantage of this is that it might take several treatments to remove that colour, extending the time and cost of fully removing the tattoo, rather than treating all colours equally at each treatment.

The speed in which the laser pulse is delivered is in nano seconds or pico seconds.

Pico lasers deliver the energy at a faster rate, supposedly providing more power for better results.  However, the effectiveness of the laser treatment is not just about speed, because its wavelength that is critical for ink absorption.  The wavelength used must be the right wavelength for the specific colour of the ink.  The right wavelength shatters the ink into particles small enough for your body to remove. Treating a tattoo with the wrong wavelength will not impact the ink or remove the tattoo.

Our Quanta laser has three native wavelengths that effectively treat a huge range of different coloured ink.  We can also combine wavelengths to treat two colours in one pass (eg. burgandy ink that is a blend of black and red ink together).

The Picosure laser by Cynosure doesn’t have the same native wavelengths.  It has one wavelength of 755nm that is filtered to treat the full range of colours.  This filtering process is effective for black and green ink but lacks ideal absorption for reds, oranges, and some blues.

To understand more about the differences between the Picosure laser and our Quanta laser, view our article here: The Trust About Pico Lasers

The square spot distributes power equally across the treatment window in comparison to a round spot, which is hotter in the centre, weaker at the outside edge, and requires more overlap.  With a round spot it is impossible to treat the whole tattoo equally, either under treating or overtreating areas and causing additional disturbance to the skin.

Not normally.  Not if the laser settings have been carefully and conservatively adjusted specific to the client and their ink.  It is possible to set the laser too high, causing bright, white frosting to the skin in response to a treatment.  This indicates that the power is too high, the frosting response should be grey, not white.  We’ve had clients come to us with skin damaged and scarred by laser treatments at other clinics, so it does happen.

At MorphIUs, our laser has the additional capability of delivering fractionated laser treatment.  This divides the laser beam into thousands of microscopic columns of light which penetrate deep into the skin, impacting the tissue within the columns while leaving the area around them unaffected. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, creating new skin cells and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin to heal the light affected areas.  This is the same treatment we use to remedy scars.  We include this treatment free at every tattoo removal session to prepare the skin, promote healing and treat any underlying scar tissue that may be present from the tattoo process or previous laser sessions.

Yes, we can protect the parts of your tattoo that you don’t want to remove so the laser only impacts the target area.  Our laser has a square treatment window which allows us to be very precise with our aim and align spots next to each other in a clear pattern.

The clearance of ink is an immune response to a foreign particle.  The laser smashes the ink into tiny particles, small enough for your immune system to dissolve and then sweep away via your lymphatic system.  Your gut health is an important indicator of immune health and ink clearance can be improved by working on your gut.  We offer a range of supplements that support gut health and additionally refer clients to a naturopath if a more in-depth approach is valued.

Fitness and mobility also has an impact on ink clearance as physical exercise optimises and renews cell biology and system functions.  Dry brushing is beneficial for improving lymphatic drainage around the tattoo site.

There is a fast track option we offer clients who need results by a specific date and are willing to attend the studio for additional fractional treatments between sessions. However we cannot forecast or guarantee how long the removal process will take for you.

You may reduce the number of removal sessions by up to half if the aim is to fade the tattoo, rather than remove it altogether.  We recommend that you consult with your tattoo artist, who will let you know when they feel the ink has faded sufficiently for their new artwork to be effective.

Redness and inflammation is common and blisters may appear in response to treating coloured ink.

Laser post-treatment is similar to post tattoo treatment.

Keep the area clean, pat dry, avoid sun and chlorine pools and apply aftercare until the skin has healed.  Abstain from exercise or sports that impact the treatment site, avoid trauma to the treated area until any blistering or redness has subsided.  You will receive detailed written instructions on what to do and not to do after your treatment appointment.

At MorphIUs we use organic after care products to soothe your skin and promote healing.  We apply organic aloe vera immediately post treatment to soothe and hydrate the skin.  We recommend organic tamanu oil to fast-track healing with its antibiotic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerative qualities.  These aftercare products are available to purchase instore.

We ask you to contact us immediately if you have any post-treatment concerns so we can review your situation and recommend the appropriate action.

Your skin should look like it did before the tattoo.  The skin texture, tone and colour returned to normal.

This is not always the case with laser tattoo removal, it depends on the laser technology, the settings used, and the skill and experience of the operator.

Our Quanta laser has a unique fractionated capability which we use to prepare your skin for treatment and restore your natural tone and texture.  Treatment with fractionated laser is included free with every treatment.

We treat scar tissue, not create it.

At MorphIUs, every appointment is a sacred space set aside just for you. We offer a personalised, one-on-one experience in a private studio, designed to support your transformation with presence, precision, and integrity.

Your initial consult is free.  This is our gift to you, so you can explore treatment options without obligation.

If you need to cancel or reschedule we ask you to provide at least 24 hours notice.  If you cancel on the day, or fail to show, we are left with a hole in our calendar that’s difficult to fill — for us that means lost time, lost impact, and lost revenue.

Once you proceed to treatment, cancellation fees apply if you provide less than 24 hours notice.

We appreciate your respect for our time as we respect yours.
